Rat Royale slot review
Rat Royale is a Pragmatic Play slot set in an underground kingdom run by armoured rats, played on a 5×5 grid with 259 ways to win. Its hook is the Rat King wild, a reel-3 symbol that carries one of four gem powers and multipliers up to x500. Three free spins modes build on that wild, and the published maths lists a 96.52% RTP with medium volatility.

How to play Rat Royale
Rat Royale uses five reels and five rows, but it does not use fixed paylines. A win starts on the leftmost reel, and each following symbol must sit on the next reel either on the same row or one row above or below. Pragmatic counts 259 possible paths across the grid, and three, four or five matching symbols on a path pay out.
The paytable is short. Four warrior rats, each gripping a coloured gem in blue, green, purple or red, make up the premium set and pay between 0.75x and 3x the bet for five of a kind. The 10 to A royals top out at 0.6x, so most of the value sits in the wild multipliers.
Third-party listings give a bet range of 0.20 to 240 per spin, with lower caps in markets such as the UK that have their own stake limits. Slotcatalog lists the hit frequency at 24.39%, so roughly one spin in four returns something.
Theme and design
The setting is a gloomy underground kingdom of stone vaults, scattered gold and candlelit ruins. The premium symbols are armoured rat warriors and mystics, each holding a glowing gem that stands out against the grey stone. Early reviews point out that the tone is darker than Pragmatic's usual cartoon style, closer to dark fantasy than to comedy.
No review we read describes the soundtrack, so our design score rests on the art. The gem colours also show at a glance which power a Rat King wild has.
Rat Royale features explained
Two kinds of wild drive the base game. Both stand in for every symbol except the King Rat scatter, and both carry multipliers. When several wilds sit in the same winning way, their multipliers are added together rather than multiplied, which keeps outcomes steadier than in slots where wild multipliers compound.
- Regular wilds: can land on any reel, up to three per reel, each with a multiplier between x1 and x100.
- Rat King wilds: land only on reel 3, with multipliers between x2 and x500. Each one arrives holding a gem, and the gem decides what it does to the rest of the screen.
The four gem powers give the slot its character:
- Red gem: if the spin produces a win, the Rat King expands to cover all of reel 3, and every premium rat showing a red gem adds +1 to its multiplier.
- Purple gem: the Rat King collects the multipliers of every regular wild in view and adds them to its own.
- Green gem: works in the opposite direction, passing the Rat King's multiplier to each regular wild on the grid.
- Blue gem: any premium rat holding a blue gem turns into a regular wild with a random multiplier from x1 to x100.
Purple and blue are the ones to watch: purple concentrates value into one large multiplier, while blue can fill the screen with extra wilds. Because every five-symbol win passes through reel 3, a Rat King there sits on almost every route that matters.
Rat Royale free spins and bonus modes
Three, four or five King Rat scatters start the bonus, and the number of scatters picks the mode. Every mode opens with 10 free spins, and landing three or more scatters during the round adds five more. Slotcatalog puts the average base-game trigger rate at about one in 174 spins.
- Blood Ritual (3 scatters): every regular wild that lands carries at least x2, which removes the weakest wild results.
- Blood Pact (4 scatters): a sticky Rat King wild holds the centre of the grid for the whole round. It takes a new gem on each spin, and its multiplier keeps growing instead of resetting.
- Blood Lust (5 scatters): a fully expanded Rat King wild covers all of reel 3 for the entire bonus, again with a fresh random gem every spin and a multiplier that only climbs.
Blood Ritual is a modest upgrade on the base game, Blood Pact adds a permanent anchor, and Blood Lust is built for the largest results, since a full-reel wild in the centre touches nearly every way. Five scatters are rare, which is why the second ante bet and the super buy offer direct routes into Blood Lust.
Rat Royale bonus buy options
Where bonus buys are permitted, Rat Royale offers two buys and two ante bets. Costs are multiples of your base bet; the RTP column is as reported by OLBG.
| Feature | Cost | What you get | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy Free Spins | 100x bet | The standard free spins round (OLBG names it Blood Ritual) | 96.54% |
| Buy Super Free Spins | 500x bet | Blood Lust guaranteed | 96.52% |
| Ante Bet 1 | 2.5x bet per spin | Four times the normal chance of triggering free spins | 96.54% |
| Ante Bet 2 | 5x bet per spin | Higher trigger chance, and any bonus it triggers is Blood Lust | 96.48% |
The standard buy at 100x is in line with Pragmatic's usual pricing, and its listed RTP is a touch above the base figure, so the maths does not penalise you for buying. The super buy costs five times as much for the strongest mode, a steep but logical step, and many of those rounds will still return less than they cost.
Ante Bet 2 is the most interesting option: paying 5x per spin so every triggered bonus is Blood Lust is a slower way of chasing the top mode, at a slightly lower RTP. At the 240 maximum base bet it pushes a spin to 1,200. Whichever option you choose, bonus buys and antes raise the cost of each round sharply and do not tilt the long-run return in your favour.
Rat Royale RTP, volatility and max win
The standard Rat Royale RTP is 96.52%. Pragmatic also offers operators 95.50% and 94.53% versions, so the figure can differ between casinos, and the in-game information screen shows which one you are playing. Stake's game page lists 96.52%, which indicates it runs the top setting.
Volatility is medium. That is a calmer setting than many recent releases with five-figure caps, and it fits the additive multiplier rules: wins come often enough to keep a balance moving, while the big outcomes rely on stacking wild multipliers during the bonus.
Max win is where the sources split. Stake's page lists 25,000x, while Slotcatalog, OLBG, iGamingToday and Casinos.com all give 15,000x the bet, and the €3,600,000 cap shown by Casinos.com equals 15,000x of a €240 stake. We use 15,000x because every independent source repeats it and it matches the stake arithmetic. We will update this page if the official game rules show a different figure.
Rat Royale demo and who it suits
A Rat Royale demo is the best way to learn the gem system before risking real money. Pragmatic normally makes its games available in free play, and slot databases list a demo version.
Rat Royale suits players who want medium-volatility pacing with a meaningful ceiling. The base game is busy without being punishing, and the three-tier bonus gives you a reason to care whether three, four or five scatters land.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants a simple slot. The four gems take a few sessions to read at a glance, and the gritty look is far from Pragmatic's bright sweets and fishing titles.
Our verdict on Rat Royale
Rat Royale is one of the more thoughtful Pragmatic Play releases this autumn. The connected-ways grid makes reel 3 the focal point, and the four gem powers give the Rat King wild real variety from spin to spin. The three free spins modes are clearly separated, topped by Blood Lust and its ever-growing full-reel wild.
The numbers are solid rather than exceptional. A 96.52% RTP is above average, medium volatility keeps sessions steady, and a 15,000x cap is respectable for that risk level. The conflict over the max win, with Stake's page showing 25,000x, still needs settling, and the base symbol pays are thin. Overall it is a strong medium-risk slot that rewards players who take the time to learn its gems.
Overall = 8.0×0.25 + 7.5×0.25 + 7.5×0.2 + 7.0×0.15 + 7.5×0.15 = 7.6. The score rates the game, not your odds of winning.
