The Dog House is the 2019 Pragmatic Play slot that started one of the studio's longest-running series, and it still ranks among the most played games on Stake. It is a classic 5×3, 20-payline game with multiplier wilds, a 96.51% top RTP and a 6,750x max win. This review explains how the free spins work, how it differs from the many sequels and who should play it.

How to play The Dog House

The Dog House uses five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines. Wins pay from left to right when three or more matching symbols land on a line, starting from the first reel. A rottweiler is the top-paying symbol, followed by other breeds, collars and bones, while card ranks fill the low end of the paytable.

The total bet runs from 0.20 to 100 per spin, although some regulated markets cap it lower. There is nothing to set up beyond the stake: no ante bet, no volatility switch and no feature buy. You choose your bet, spin and wait for wilds and scatters.

That simplicity is part of the appeal. The Dog House is a line slot from before the era of pay-anywhere grids and stacked buy menus, so every result is easy to read at a glance.

The Dog House features explained

The game has two features, and both centre on the kennel wild.

  • Multiplier wilds: The kennel wild only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4. It replaces every symbol except the paw print scatter, and each wild that helps form a win carries a random 2x or 3x multiplier.
  • Combined multipliers: When more than one wild is part of the same winning line, their multipliers are combined, for a top multiplier of 9x on a single line in the base game.
  • Paw print scatter: The bonus symbol appears on reels 1, 3 and 5. Three of them pay 5x the total bet and trigger the free spins.

Because wilds can only appear on the middle three reels, the best base-game hits come from a premium symbol on reels 1 and 5 with multiplier wilds connecting them. A full line of high-value symbols with three 3x wilds is where the base game peaks.

According to OLBG, the base game lands a win on about 27.55% of spins, roughly once every 3.63 spins. That is a fairly typical figure for a 20-line game of this kind.

Free spins and sticky wilds

Landing three paw prints on reels 1, 3 and 5 in the same spin pays 5x the bet and opens a pick screen made of nine positions. Each position reveals one, two or three spins, and the total decides your round. The minimum is 9 free spins and the maximum is 27.

During the round, every wild that lands on reels 2, 3 and 4 sticks in place until the last spin, keeping its multiplier. Wilds collected early therefore boost every later spin, and a round that locks two or three multiplier wilds on the first few spins can produce large line wins on most of the remaining spins.

There is no retrigger. The scatter does not appear during the free spins, so the number you reveal on the pick screen is the number you get. OLBG estimates the round triggers about once every 180 spins, which is a fairly short wait by modern standards, although results vary widely from one session to the next.

Does The Dog House have a bonus buy?

No. The original Dog House has no option to buy the free spins and no ante bet, which sets it apart from most of the later games in the series. The only way into the bonus is to land the three paw prints naturally.

For some players this is a benefit. Without a buy button, the cost per round is always your chosen stake, and it is easier to keep a session under control. If you want a Dog House game with a feature buy, several of the sequels offer one, but they also come with different maths and, in most cases, a higher cost per round.

The Dog House RTP, volatility and max win

The Dog House RTP is 96.51% in its top version, the figure listed on Pragmatic Play's own game page. A 95.51% version also exists, and slotcatalog lists that lower figure, so it is worth checking the game's info screen before you play. One percentage point does not change a single session much, but over thousands of spins it raises the expected cost of play from about 3.5% to about 4.5% of your total stake.

The game labels itself Medium volatility on its intro screen, while some review sites rate it high. Medium is a fair description of how often the bonus arrives, but the spread of results is still wide. Most of the game's return comes from the free spins, and how many sticky wilds you collect decides whether a round pays a few times your bet or several hundred times.

The Dog House max win is 6,750x the bet, the figure shown on the game's intro screen, which works out at 675,000 on a 100 stake. That was a strong figure for a 2019 line slot, and it still sits above the 5,000x cap of many newer games. Reaching it needs a free spins round with high-multiplier wilds locked on all three middle reels and premium symbols filling the lines around them.

How the original Dog House differs from the sequels

Pragmatic Play has built a whole series on this game, including Megaways, Multihold and Dog or Alive versions among others. The original is the simplest of them. It sticks to 20 fixed lines, wilds only on the middle three reels and multipliers capped at 3x per wild.

The sequels generally add more ways to win, larger multipliers, feature buys and higher max wins. Some also change how the multipliers combine; The Dog House Megaways 1000, for example, multiplies wild values together rather than adding them, and lists a much higher cap. Those changes make the newer games more volatile and more expensive to play aggressively.

If you want to understand why the series became so popular, start with this one. The pick screen and sticky wilds are the core of every later version, and here they are presented without any extra layers.

Is there a The Dog House demo?

Yes. Pragmatic Play serves a free The Dog House demo from its own demo server, and Stake offers the game in Fun Play mode. The demo plays with virtual credit and the same rules as the real game.

It is a useful way to see how often the paw prints line up on reels 1, 3 and 5 and how much a typical free spins round pays at your preferred stake.

Who The Dog House suits

The Dog House suits players who like traditional line slots with one clear feature to chase. The rules take a minute to learn, the 96.51% top RTP is solid, and the lack of a bonus buy keeps costs predictable.

It is less suited to players who want constant action or very large caps. The base game can be quiet for long stretches, and a 6,750x ceiling is well below the newest games in the series. Players who want buy options and bigger multipliers should look at the later Dog House titles instead.

Our verdict on The Dog House

The Dog House has aged well because its one big idea is a good one. Sticky wilds with 2x or 3x multipliers and a pick screen that decides between 9 and 27 spins give every bonus round a clear sense of tension, and the 96.51% top RTP is fair for a medium volatility line slot.

Its limits are those of a 2019 line slot: no bonus buy, a fairly quiet base game and a 6,750x cap that newer releases beat. For players who want the series at its simplest, it remains a sound choice. Check which RTP version is running before you play, and use the demo to get a feel for how long the bonus can take.
