Ice Fishing strategy guide

Ice Fishing is Evolution's speed game show: a 53-segment virtual wheel, two even-money Leaf bets and three fish bonus rounds, with a new result roughly every half minute. Its best bets carry a lower house edge than most game shows, but the pace means costs add up quickly, and this guide shows both sides in numbers.

RTP 95.17%–97.10%Max win 5,000×Game show

Key points

  • No system beats the house edge: every Ice Fishing bet returns between 95.17% and 97.10% over the long run.
  • Leaf 1 and Leaf 2 are the best-value bets at 97.10%; Huge Reds is the most expensive at 95.17%.
  • Betting both Leaves just returns your stake most rounds and doubles what you pay in house edge.
  • At roughly 130 rounds an hour, a low edge still adds up: budget by time as well as money.
  • Fish bonuses are never due; each spin and each boost is random.

How Ice Fishing works

Ice Fishing is built for speed. A presenter hosts from an Evolution studio, but the wheel itself is a virtual 53-segment wheel driven by a random number generator, which lets a full round finish in roughly 20 to 30 seconds. Betting windows are short, typically 12 to 15 seconds.

There are five bet spots. Leaf 1 and Leaf 2 each cover 23 segments and pay even money. The other seven segments are fish bonuses: four Lil' Blues, two Big Oranges and one Huge Reds. Many lobbies also offer an All Bonuses button that places a stake on all three fish in one click.

Before each spin the game can add boosts. A boosted Leaf segment pays 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x or 10x your stake back instead of 2x, and a boost on a fish colour (2x up to 10x) multiplies every value in that bonus round if the colour lands. A boost only counts when the wheel stops on the boosted segment; otherwise the round pays as normal.

Ice Fishing odds and RTP per bet

The table above lists every bet. The headline is simple: both Leaf bets return 97.10%, more than the best bet in Crazy Time (96.08%) or Funky Time (95.99%). The fish bonuses return between 95.17% and 95.69%.

  • Leaf maths. A Leaf wins 23 of 53 rounds, 43.4%. Paid at even money alone, that would return only about 86.8%. Boosts make up the rest: roughly one Leaf win in ten lands on a boosted segment, and those 3x to 10x payouts carry about a tenth of the bet's total value.
  • Fish maths. Lil' Blues lands about once every 13 rounds, Big Oranges once every 26 and Huge Reds once every 53. Each step down in frequency brings bigger prizes and a slightly lower RTP.
  • In money. 100 rounds at 1.00 on a Leaf cost about 2.90 on average. The same on Huge Reds cost about 4.83, two thirds more.

Version note: we use the standard figures above. Independent sources agree on them except for Big Oranges, which one tracker lists at 96.60%; three other sources give 95.60%, which is what we use. Casinos may cap the payout per round (500,000 is common), and on very large fish stakes that cap can lower the effective RTP.

The three fish bonuses

When the wheel stops on a fish, the host casts into the ice hole for that colour and the catch is revealed in stages; its size sets the multiplier. Only players with a stake on that fish take part, though everyone watches. Every catch pays at least the bottom of its range, so a fish bonus never returns nothing.

  • Lil' Blues (4 segments, 7.55% of spins). Values from 3x to 100x. The most frequent bonus, with the smallest range and the best RTP of the three at 95.69%.
  • Big Oranges (2 segments, 3.77%). Values from 4x to 200x. Bigger catches are hauled up with heavier lifting gear as the multiplier climbs. RTP 95.60%.
  • Huge Reds (1 segment, 1.89%). Values from 10x to 500x. With a 10x boost on top, a 500x catch becomes the game's 5,000x maximum. RTP 95.17%.

Most catches sit near the bottom of each range. One tracker's 90-day medians were about 8x for Lil' Blues, 13x for Big Oranges and 23x for Huge Reds. The rare top values are what lift the averages to around 95%, so a fish bet spends most of its time paying back less than its long-run average.

Popular strategies and the maths behind them

The strategies table below compares the common approaches. None of them changes the house edge; they only change how often you are paid and how wild the swings are. Worked numbers at 1.00 per spot per round:

  • One Leaf only. The lowest cost per unit staked: about 2.90 per 100 rounds. You win in about 43 of them.
  • Both Leaves. With 1.00 on each, an unboosted Leaf result returns exactly your 2.00, so most rounds break even. You lose 2.00 when a fish lands (13.2% of rounds) and profit only when the winning Leaf is boosted. The RTP stays at 97.10%, but the expected cost per round doubles to about 0.058 without adding anything.
  • All three fish. 1.00 on each fish blends to about 95.49% and pays out in about 1 of every 7.6 rounds (7 of 53). 100 rounds cost about 13.54 on average (300 staked at a 4.51% edge).
  • Huge Reds only. In about 15% of 100-round runs it never lands at all. Expected cost is 4.83 per 100 staked, with the largest swings in the game.
  • Leaf plus a fish. 0.80 on a Leaf and 0.20 on Lil' Blues blends to about 96.82%, only 0.28 more per 100 staked than a pure Leaf bet, while giving you a part in the most frequent bonus.
  • Martingale on a Leaf. A Leaf loses 56.6% of rounds. Seven losses in a row happen in about 1.9% of sequences and cost 127.00 from a 1.00 start. Because rounds are so fast, you can play through enough sequences in one evening to meet that streak.

Bankroll and session plan for a fast game

Pace is the fact that matters most here. At around 27 seconds a round, Ice Fishing runs roughly 130 rounds an hour, more than twice the pace of a classic game show. A low house edge on a fast game can cost as much per hour as a higher edge on a slow one: 1.00 a round on a Leaf costs about 3.77 an hour on average, while 1.00 a round on the 1 in Crazy Time, at about 50 rounds an hour, costs about 1.96.

  1. Budget by time as well as money. With 100.00 and 1.00 a round on a Leaf, the average cost of an hour is small, but normal swings over 130 rounds are around 14 units either way.
  2. Keep the stake at about 1% of the budget. That gives you hundreds of rounds before a bad run can end the session.
  3. Set stop rules. Stop at 50.00 left or at 150.00 reached, and cap the session at a fixed number of rounds, for example 200, which is about 90 minutes.
  4. Use autoplay limits if you use autoplay. Set a loss limit and a round count so the speed does not carry you past your plan.
  5. No top-ups. If the budget is gone, the session is over.

Myths: due fish, boost patterns and Leaf streaks

Ice Fishing results are generated fresh every round, and the boosts are assigned at random each time. Nothing that happened before changes the next spin.

  • “Huge Reds is due.” It has a 1 in 53 chance every spin. A gap of 100 spins or more happens about 15% of the time and a gap of 200 or more about 2.2% of the time. Waiting longer does not shorten the odds.
  • “Boosts follow a pattern.” Which segment gets boosted, and by how much, is random per round. Spotting a run of boosted wins on one Leaf tells you nothing about the next one.
  • “Switch Leaves after a streak.” Leaf 1 and Leaf 2 are identical 23-segment bets. Alternating, following or betting against streaks leaves the RTP at 97.10%.
  • “Trackers show the best time to play.” Tracker medians are useful for setting expectations about typical catches. They cannot tell you when a big one is coming.

Ice Fishing FAQ

What is the best bet in Ice Fishing?

Leaf 1 or Leaf 2. Each returns 97.10% and wins 43.4% of rounds at even money, with occasional boosts up to 10x. Of the fish bonuses, Lil' Blues has the best RTP at 95.69%.

What is the RTP of Ice Fishing?

It depends on the bet: 97.10% on each Leaf, 95.69% on Lil' Blues, 95.60% on Big Oranges and 95.17% on Huge Reds.

Is there a winning strategy for Ice Fishing?

No. Every bet has a built-in house edge, and no system or tracker changes it. You can choose cheaper bets, keep stakes small relative to your budget and set stop rules.

How often does Huge Reds land?

Huge Reds has 1 of 53 segments, so it lands in about 1.89% of spins, once every 53 on average. Gaps of 100 spins or more happen about 15% of the time.

What is the maximum win in Ice Fishing?

5,000x the stake, from a 500x Huge Reds catch combined with a 10x boost. Casinos may also cap the payout per round.

Is the Ice Fishing wheel real?

The host is live, but the wheel is virtual and driven by a random number generator. That is what keeps rounds to about half a minute.

Should I bet on both Leaf 1 and Leaf 2?

There is no benefit. An unboosted result returns your combined stake, a fish loses both, and you pay the house edge on twice the money for the same RTP.
