How to play Duel at Dawn

The Duel at Dawn slot uses five reels and five rows with 19 fixed paylines. Wins pay for matching symbols along a line, read from the left. The Sheriff's star is the top regular symbol, premium symbols pay 3x to 10x the bet for five of a kind, and a line of five Wilds pays 10x.

Bets run from 0.10 to 100 per spin, a wider range than many recent Hacksaw games. OLBG measures a base game hit frequency of 29.86%, so roughly one spin in three and a third lands a win. Most of those are small line hits, and reviewers agree the base game can go dry for long spells between the big moments.

Those moments come from two special symbols, the VS symbol and the Outlaw. They never land on the same spin, so each spin is either a potential duel, a potential shootout, or an ordinary line spin.

Duel at Dawn features explained

  • DuelReels: a VS symbol expands into a full wild reel, but only when the expanded reel would complete a win. A duel then plays out on the reel between The Outlaw and The Sheriff, each holding a multiplier. Whoever survives applies their multiplier to every win that uses the reel. Values run from 2x up to 200x, and when several DuelReels share a win, their multipliers are added together.
  • The Outlaw: when an Outlaw lands, it becomes a full wild reel and shows a revolver loaded with one to six bullets. Each bullet shoots a Wild onto a random spot on the grid. Up to two Outlaws can land on one spin, they cannot hit the same positions or each other, and each Outlaw reel carries its own 2x to 200x multiplier. Multipliers on several Outlaw reels in one win are also added together.
  • Wild: substitutes for every paying symbol.

The Outlaw is the more reliable of the two. Extra Wilds mean extra line wins even when the multiplier is low, while a DuelReel only expands if it completes a win. The DuelReel has the higher ceiling, though: two or three of them in one win with large multipliers is where the base game's biggest payouts come from.

Duel at Dawn free spins and bonus games

Three or four FS scatters landing together trigger one of two bonus rounds, each starting with 10 free spins.

  • Wild Wild West (3 scatters): the base game rules stay in place, but VS and Outlaw symbols appear more often and high multipliers are more likely on both. Two more scatters during the round add two spins, and three add four.
  • Dusk 'Til Dawn (4 scatters): VS symbols are removed from normal spins. Instead, Outlaws fill a six-bullet revolver with the Wilds they shoot, and each full revolver unlocks a DuelSpin. DuelSpins guarantee VS symbols: at least two on the first, three on the second, four on the third, and five on the fourth and last. Each DuelSpin also adds three free spins and does not use up one of your own.

The two rounds feel very different. Wild Wild West is the steadier of the pair, with frequent duels and shootouts. Dusk 'Til Dawn is all about the DuelSpin ladder: reaching the third or fourth DuelSpin means four or five wild reels with added multipliers, but stalling on the first one or two is common, and reviewers describe it as hit or miss.

Duel at Dawn bonus buy options

FeatureCostWhat you get
BonusHunt FeatureSpins3× bet per spinMore than five times the usual chance of triggering free spins
Deadly Duels FeatureSpins60× bet per spinAt least two VS symbols on every spin; no scatters
Lone Outlaw FeatureSpins60× bet per spinAt least one Outlaw with two or more bullets on every spin; no scatters
Wild Wild West100× betDirect entry to the 3-scatter free spins
Dusk 'Til Dawn200× betDirect entry to the 4-scatter free spins

At a 1.00 bet, Wild Wild West costs 100 and Dusk 'Til Dawn costs 200. The two FeatureSpins modes are charged per spin, so ten Deadly Duels spins cost 600, six times a Wild Wild West buy. The price gap between the two bonuses is only 2x, which is narrow by Hacksaw standards, and it makes the top round the natural target for players who buy.

The bonus buy menu is not offered in the UK, and the return of each buy option was not published in the sources we checked. Buying features raises the cost of each round considerably and does not improve your long-term odds.

Duel at Dawn RTP, volatility and max win

The standard Duel at Dawn RTP is 96.30%, a house edge of 3.70%, and that is the figure on Stake's game page. Like most Hacksaw slots it comes in lower versions too: OLBG lists 94.27% and 92.28%, and SlotCatalog's stats box shows 94.27% as its headline figure. GamesHub mentions a 94.55% option. The game's info screen tells you which version a casino runs.

Stake and SlotCatalog rate volatility as high, while Racing Post and SlotCatalog's written review place it at medium to high. We list high. The base game has real power when DuelReels stack, but its ordinary line wins are small, and the free spins rounds can end flat.

The Duel at Dawn max win is 15,000x the bet, which Stake's game page, SlotCatalog and OLBG all confirm. One Stake category page gives 10,000x, which we treat as outdated. At the 100 top bet the cap is worth 1,500,000. OLBG notes it can be reached in both the base game and the bonuses, though in practice it needs several high multipliers combining on the same win.

How Duel at Dawn compares

Duel at Dawn borrows from two of Hacksaw's best known games. The VS duel mechanic comes from Wanted Dead or a Wild, and the bullet-firing wilds recall 2 Wild 2 Die. Putting them on the same 5×5 grid gives the base game two different ways to explode, which is more than most line slots offer.

Stake also carries Hacksaw's newer Wild West title, Le Outlaw, which is a very different game: a cluster pays reveal slot with a 25,000x cap and a cartoon style. Duel at Dawn is grittier, line based and more about big multipliers than collecting coins.

Who Duel at Dawn suits

Duel at Dawn suits players who like high-variance line slots with multiplier wild reels, and anyone who enjoyed Wanted Dead or a Wild's duels. The 0.10 to 100 bet range covers both small and large budgets, and the relatively cheap 200x top bonus makes it attractive to players who buy features.

It does not suit players who want a steady flow of wins. Dry spells in the base game are normal and Dusk 'Til Dawn can disappoint. If you want to know more about where we play, read our Stake review.

Our verdict on Duel at Dawn

Duel at Dawn is one of Hacksaw's stronger Wild West games. DuelReels and Outlaw wilds give the base game two distinct routes to a big hit, the multipliers up to 200x each add together, and the Dusk 'Til Dawn DuelSpin ladder is a well-designed climax. The 96.30% RTP and the 15,000x cap are solid for a high-volatility line slot.

The downsides are long quiet stretches in the base game, a top bonus that often stalls before the later DuelSpins, and lower RTP versions at some operators. For players comfortable with high variance it is an easy recommendation, ideally played at a modest stake.
