Funky Time strategy guide
Funky Time is Evolution's disco game show, played on a 64-segment LED wheel with 17 bet spots and random multipliers lit up every round. Its bets sit in a very narrow RTP band, so the real choice is about risk rather than value, and this guide puts numbers on that choice.
Key points
- No system beats the house edge: every Funky Time bet returns between 95.38% and 95.99% over the long run.
- The 1 (95.99%) and Bar (95.98%) are the best-value bets; VIP Disco is the most expensive at 95.38%.
- The RTP spread is only 0.61 points, so your real choice is how much variance you want.
- Spelling a word earns nothing extra: each letter is a separate 25:1 bet at 95.49%.
- Trackers record the past; multipliers and bonuses are random every spin.
Funky Time odds and RTP by bet
Axis runs from 94% to 100%, so the gaps look bigger than they are. Every bet loses money on average; the house edge is 100% minus the RTP.

How Funky Time works
Funky Time is played on a DigiWheel: a physical wheel whose 64 segments are LED screens, so the game can light up symbols and multipliers on it each round. The wheel changes spin direction between rounds. A host runs the show from a 1970s disco studio, and you have about 20 seconds to bet.
There are 17 bet spots. The 1 covers 28 segments and pays even money. Each of the 12 letters (P, L, A, Y, F, U, N, K, T, I, M and E, spelling PLAY, FUNK and TIME) covers two segments and pays 25:1. The other 12 segments are bonus games: six Bar, three Disco, two Stayin' Alive and one VIP Disco.
Every round, random multipliers appear on segments of the wheel, typically from 2x to 50x. A multiplied 1 can pay up to 50:1 and a multiplied letter up to 1,250:1; on a bonus segment, the multiplier is applied to the bonus values. These multipliers carry a big share of each bet's return. Without them, the 1 would return only 87.5% (28 wins in 64, paying back 2) and a letter about 81.3% (2 wins in 64, paying back 26).
Funky Time odds and RTP per bet
The table above lists every bet. What stands out is how close they are: the best bet (the 1, 95.99%) and the worst (VIP Disco, 95.38%) are only 0.61 percentage points apart, a much tighter spread than in Crazy Time.
- The 1 and Bar are almost equal. The 1 returns 95.99% and the Bar bonus 95.98%. If you want bonus rounds, Bar costs you essentially nothing extra in the long run; it just swings more.
- Letters cost a little more. Every letter returns 95.49%. Each one lands in about 1 of every 32 rounds.
- In money. 100 rounds at 1.00 on the 1 cost about 4.01 on average; on VIP Disco about 4.62. On 1,000 units staked, the gap between best and worst bet is about 6 units.
Because the RTPs are so close, choosing between Funky Time bets is mostly a choice about variance, not value. These figures come from independent reviews that quote Evolution's game rules, and they match the rounded figures (about 95.4% to 96.0%) in Austria's official game conditions. Funky Time has one paytable; the cap is 10,000x per round, and some casinos also apply a cash cap, often 500,000.
The four bonus games
- Bar (6 segments). Three glasses each hide a multiplier from 2x to 20x, and one of them also gets an extra multiplier of 2x to 5x. You pick a glass, and its value is your result. A wheel multiplier on the Bar segment applies to all three glasses. RTP 95.98%.
- Stayin' Alive (2 segments). You pick one of three colour teams (green, violet or orange), each climbing a 20-step ladder from 5x to 1,000x. Balls are drawn from a machine of 90: coloured balls move a team up one or two steps, and a black STOP ball costs a life. After the fourth STOP ball the round ends and you are paid the level your team reached. RTP 95.49%.
- Disco (3 segments). Mr Funky dances across a floor of 37 squares, moving in the direction a small wheel shows, and collects the value of each square he steps on (+1 to +100) until he falls off the edge. Some squares double the value of five random squares. The collected values add up to your multiplier. RTP 95.51%.
- VIP Disco (1 segment). The same idea on a larger floor of 63 squares, with values from +1 to +500. It is the rarest bonus and has the lowest RTP in the game, 95.38%.
Any wheel multiplier on a bonus segment is applied before the bonus starts, which is how results reach the 10,000x cap. Choices you make inside a bonus, such as the glass or the team colour, all have the same expected value.
Popular strategies and the maths behind them
The strategies table below compares the usual approaches. None of them changes the house edge. Worked numbers at 1.00 per spot per round:
- Number 1 only. About 4.01 lost per 100 rounds on average, with a win in about 44 of them.
- Spell a word. With 1.00 on each letter of PLAY, one of your letters lands in 12.5% of rounds (8 of 64 segments) and a plain win returns 26.00 on a 4.00 stake. There is no extra prize for collecting a whole word. 100 rounds cost about 18.04 on average (400 staked at a 4.51% edge).
- All 12 letters. You stake 12.00 a round, a letter lands in 37.5% of rounds and a plain win returns 26.00, a 14.00 profit. The other 62.5% of rounds lose all 12.00. 100 rounds cost about 54.12 on average.
- Bonus-only. 1.00 on each bonus is 4.00 a round, with a bonus in 18.75% of rounds (12 of 64). The blend returns about 95.59%, so 100 rounds cost about 17.64.
- Cover-all. 1.00 on all 17 spots is 17.00 a round. The most common result, the 1, returns 2.00. The blend is about 95.54%, so 100 rounds cost about 75.82 on average: the edge is small, but the stake is huge.
- Martingale on the 1. The 1 loses 56.25% of rounds. Seven losses in a row happen in about 1.8% of sequences and cost 127.00 from a 1.00 start, to win back 1.00.
The cheapest mix in the game is simple: put most of your stake on the 1 and any bonus money on Bar.
Bankroll and session plan
With a 100.00 budget, a plan that keeps costs low while keeping the show fun looks like this:
- Stake 1.00 a round, 1% of the budget. That gives room for normal swings.
- Split it on purpose. For example 0.70 on the 1 and 0.30 on Bar. The blend returns about 95.99%, the same as the 1 alone, and you join the most frequent bonus. Adding 0.10 on Disco and 0.05 each on Stayin' Alive and VIP Disco (taking 0.20 off the 1) lowers the blend only to about 95.88%.
- Set stop rules first. Stop at 50.00 left or 150.00 reached, and cap the session at a fixed time. At roughly 50 rounds an hour, 1.00 a round on the 1 costs about 2.00 an hour on average.
- Do not raise stakes to chase a bonus. Bigger stakes at the same odds only mean bigger expected losses.
For contrast, 1.00 a round on VIP Disco alone costs about 4.62 per 100 rounds, and in about 21% of 100-round sessions it never lands at all. If the game stops feeling like entertainment, see our responsible gambling page.
Myths: trackers, multipliers and lucky letters
Funky Time trackers log every spin, every multiplier and every bonus. The data is real, but it has no predictive value: each spin and each set of multipliers is independent of the last.
- “VIP Disco is due.” It has a 1 in 64 chance every spin. Gaps of 100 spins or more happen about 21% of the time and gaps of 200 or more about 4.3% of the time.
- “Follow the multipliers.” Multipliers are placed at random each round, and their average effect is already inside each bet's RTP. Seeing big multipliers on letters last round says nothing about the next one.
- “Some letters are luckier.” All 12 letters have two segments each and the same 95.49% RTP. A letter that landed three times in an hour has simply landed three times.
- “The spin direction changes the odds.” The wheel alternates direction by design; it does not favour any segment.
Where to play Funky Time
Funky Time runs around the clock at casinos that carry Evolution's game shows, with the same rules and RTPs everywhere; stake limits and payout caps vary by casino. We play it at Stake, which carries the full Evolution game show line-up. Our Stake review covers limits, payments and bonus terms. Check the help panel inside the game for the limits on each spot, since letter and bonus spots often have lower maximums than the 1, and only play with money you can afford to lose.

| Approach | What you bet | Pays out | RTP | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number 1 only | All stakes on the 1 | 43.75% of rounds | 95.99% | Low |
| The lowest edge and the smoothest ride, with the odd multiplier up to 50x for interest. | ||||

| Practically the same RTP as the 1, with more swing. The cheapest way to play the bonuses. | ||||
| Spell a word | Equal stakes on the four letters of PLAY, FUNK or TIME | 12.5% of rounds | 95.49% | High |
| Completing the word earns nothing extra. It is four separate 25:1 bets at a slightly higher edge than the 1. | ||||

| Martingale on 1 | Double the stake on the 1 after every loss | 43.75% of rounds | 95.99% | Extreme |
| Steady small wins until a losing run of seven or eight hits the limit and takes them all back. | ||||
No approach changes the house edge. Strategies only change how often you win and how big the swings are.
Funky Time FAQ
What is the best bet in Funky Time?
The 1, at 95.99%, closely followed by the Bar bonus at 95.98%. The 1 wins 43.75% of rounds at even money; Bar lands about once every 11 rounds and pays more when it does.
What is the RTP of Funky Time?
It depends on the bet: 95.99% on the 1, 95.98% on Bar, 95.51% on Disco, 95.49% on each letter and on Stayin' Alive, and 95.38% on VIP Disco.
Is there a winning strategy for Funky Time?
No. Every bet has a fixed house edge, and no system, word pattern or tracker changes it. You can pick the cheaper bets, size your stake to your budget and decide in advance when to stop.
How often does VIP Disco land?
VIP Disco has 1 of 64 segments, so it lands in about 1.56% of spins, once every 64 on average. Gaps of more than 100 spins happen about a fifth of the time.
What is the maximum win in Funky Time?
10,000x the stake per round, reachable in Stayin' Alive, Disco and VIP Disco when a wheel multiplier is combined with a big bonus result. Casinos may also set a cash cap per round.
Do I win extra for spelling a full word?
No. Each letter is its own bet paying 25:1 before multipliers. Covering all four letters of a word just means four separate bets, with a combined RTP of 95.49%.
How do the multipliers on the wheel work?
Each round, random multipliers appear on wheel segments, typically from 2x to 50x. If the wheel stops on a multiplied 1 or letter, the payout is multiplied; on a bonus segment, the bonus values are multiplied before it starts.

Not confirmed: Exact per-bet RTPs come from independent reviews; Austria's official game conditions give the same figures rounded (about 96.0% on the 1 and Bar, 95.5% on letters, Stayin' Alive and Disco, 95.4% on VIP Disco). One review's FAQ lists Bar at 95.90% instead of 95.98%. We use 95.98%. The 2x–50x wheel multiplier range and the 28/24/12 segment split come from independent sources; the official conditions confirm the payout ranges (up to 50:1 on the 1 and 1,250:1 on letters) but not the counts. Release date: Evolution's launch release is dated May 2023; one review gives June 2022. Stake limits differ by casino and by spot, so no maximum bet is listed.
