Lightning Storm strategy guide
Lightning Storm is Evolution's 39-segment DigiWheel game show with five multiplier bonus games and a top prize of 20,000 times the stake. Like every game show it has a fixed house edge that no system removes, but its bets split cleanly into a low-risk Leaf bet at 97.44% and high-risk bonus bets at about 95.1%. This guide explains the odds, the bonus games and how to plan a session around them.
Key points
- Leaf is the best-value bet at 97.44% RTP and wins 19 of 39 spins at 1:1.
- Every number, X Chaser and Storm Chaser bet returns about 95.1%.
- Bonus bets cost nearly twice as much as Leaf over time but pay up to 20,000x.
- Covering the whole wheel guarantees a win each spin, yet costs about 1 unit a round.
- No tracker, multiplier pattern or doubling system changes the expected return.
Lightning Storm odds and RTP by bet
Axis runs from 94% to 100%, so the gaps look bigger than they are. Every bet loses money on average; the house edge is 100% minus the RTP.

How Lightning Storm works
Lightning Storm, launched by Evolution in July 2024, mixes a live host with a digital money wheel called the DigiWheel. The wheel has 39 segments: 19 Leaf segments and 20 numbered segments. You bet on Leaf, on any of the numbers 1 to 20, or on the two special spots, Storm Chaser and X Chaser.
As the host spins, the wheel places 20 bonus symbols on the numbered segments, so each number is linked to one of the five bonus games for that round. Some of those segments also receive a random multiplier between 2x and 50x, which boosts the bonus game it leads to. If the wheel stops on Leaf, Leaf bets pay 1:1. If it stops on a number you backed, you play that number's bonus game. Everyone can watch a bonus, but only players with a bet on the winning spot get paid. The full rules are on Evolution's Lightning Storm page.
Lightning Storm odds and RTP for every bet
The table above shows the four bet types. Leaf has the highest return at 97.44%, and that figure checks out with simple arithmetic: 19 winning segments out of 39, each paying back twice the stake, gives 38/39, or 97.44%. Every number spot returns 95.13%, X Chaser also 95.13% and Storm Chaser 95.12%.
In money terms, 100 rounds at 1.00 cost about 2.56 on Leaf and about 4.87 on any number or Chaser bet. Moving from Leaf to bonus bets nearly doubles the expected cost, in exchange for the chance of a large multiplier.
The variance gap is huge. Leaf wins almost every other round and never pays more than even money. A single number wins one round in 39 on average, and the RTP implies an average return of about 37 times the stake when it hits. Because rare results of thousands of times the stake pull that average up, most bonus wins pay less than it, and long losing runs on a single number are normal. All 20 numbers carry the same RTP, so picking particular numbers changes nothing: spreading chips over more numbers only raises how often a bonus triggers.
Storm Chaser and X Chaser bets
Storm Chaser automatically adds a chip to whichever number receives the Lightning Storm bonus symbol that round. If you already had a bet there, the two are added together. It guarantees that you are in the Lightning Storm bonus if the wheel lands on it, which happens about once in 39 rounds, but it does not guarantee a win in the main game. At 95.12% it is fractionally the lowest RTP on the table.
X Chaser covers every number that received both a bonus symbol and a multiplier during the spin. It is a way of always holding the boosted spots, but the multipliers are already priced into its 95.13% RTP, so it is not better value than a plain number bet. Check the bet panel in the game to see how much the X Chaser places in a given round.
The five bonus games
- Hot Spot (up to 10,000x): you pick one tile on a hidden 9 by 12 wall of multipliers, with the biggest values grouped together. After the reveal, a 3 by 3 frame moves across the wall and doubles whatever it stops on, including your tile if it is covered. A wheel multiplier from the main spin multiplies the whole wall first.
- Monster Mash (up to 10,000x): three reels build a monster from a head, a torso and legs, each carrying a multiplier. Regular multipliers are added together and Global ones multiply the total, so two Regular parts of 5x and 8x with a 4x Global part pay 52x.
- Battery Charger (up to 10,000x): ten batteries ride a conveyor, nine with Regular multipliers and one Global battery. A mini wheel decides each one: red overcharges and removes the battery, green on a Regular battery wins it and ends the round, and green on the Global battery doubles all remaining batteries. The round also ends when only one battery is left.
- Fireball (up to 10,000x): a ball drops into one of 149 pockets. A Regular pocket ends the round and pays its value. A Double pocket doubles every Regular multiplier and the ball is launched again.
- Lightning Storm (up to 20,000x): a billboard holds eight Regular and three Global multipliers. You choose one of three lightning strikes; each strike adds up one or more Regular values and may multiply them by one Global value. The strike you chose is your result.
A multiplier won on the main wheel is applied to the bonus multipliers before that round begins. The choices you make inside a bonus, such as which tile or which strike, are presentation: the outcome is random either way.
Lightning Storm strategies, judged with the maths
A mix of bets returns the stake-weighted average of its parts, so any approach can be priced in seconds. Examples per 100 rounds:
- Leaf only at 1.00: expected cost 2.56. You win about 49 rounds in 100 and never see a bonus payout.
- 6.00 on Leaf and 1.00 on five numbers: 11.00 a round, RTP about 96.39%, expected cost about 39.70 on 1,100 staked. A Leaf result returns 12.00, a small net gain of 1.00. One of your numbers hits about one round in eight. In the other 15 rounds out of 39, about 38% of the time, you lose the full 11.00.
- Leaf plus all 20 numbers at 1.00 each: 21.00 a round with a combined RTP of about 95.24%, which works out to an average cost of about 1.00 every round. Some bet wins every spin, but a Leaf result only returns 2.00 of the 21.00 staked, and a bonus must pay more than 20 times the stake just to break even on that round.
- Storm Chaser only at 1.00: expected cost 4.88, with an average wait of 39 rounds per trigger and many triggers paying modest amounts.
- Martingale on Leaf: doubling after each loss from 1.00, seven losses in a row need 127.00 staked to win 1.00, and that run happens about once in 107 sequences. Ten in a row, about once in 800, needs 1,023.00. Table limits and bankrolls end the system long before the maths stops working against it.
If you want bonus action at the lowest cost, use Leaf as the base and keep number bets small relative to it. Going heavier on numbers or Chaser bets is a choice for higher variance, not for better odds.
Bankroll and session plan
Set the budget before you open the table and size each round from it.
- Pick a session budget you are comfortable losing, for example 200.00.
- Keep the total stake per round to about 1% of it, so 2.00 here, for example 1.00 on Leaf and 1.00 spread across numbers in smaller chips where the limits allow.
- Stop if the balance falls to 100.00, and cash out if it climbs to 300.00 or after a large bonus win.
- Set a time limit, since the expected cost grows with every round.
Worked example: at about 50 rounds an hour, 1.00 on Leaf plus 1.00 on numbers stakes 100.00 an hour with an average cost of about 3.70. Put the full 2.00 on numbers instead and the average cost rises to about 4.90 an hour, with far bigger swings. Any single hour can end well above or below these averages, which is why the stop rules carry more weight than the bet mix.
Myths: trackers, multipliers and numbers that are due
Results trackers show which numbers and bonus games came up recently. That record cannot predict the next spin. The DigiWheel result is independent every round, and bonus symbols and multipliers are reassigned with each spin, so a number that has not hit for a long time is no more likely to hit now, and a bonus game that paid big recently is not 'cold'.
Chasing only spots with large wheel multipliers is another common idea. Those multipliers are part of the game's maths and already included in the 95.13% return on number bets. Following them changes your variance, not your expected result.
Where to play Lightning Storm
Lightning Storm is available at casinos with Evolution's live lobby, including Stake, where it ranks among the most played game shows. Bet limits and any per-round payout cap depend on the casino and table, so check the game's help panel for the limits and the RTP figures your version uses. No approach changes the house edge. Strategies only change how often you win and how big the swings are.
Lightning Storm FAQ
What is the best bet in Lightning Storm?
Leaf, with an RTP of 97.44%. It wins on 19 of the 39 segments and pays 1:1, so it is the lowest-cost and lowest-variance option.
What is the RTP of Lightning Storm?
It ranges from 95.12% to 97.44% depending on the bet: Leaf 97.44%, each number and X Chaser 95.13%, and Storm Chaser 95.12%.
How often does the Lightning Storm bonus come up?
Reports indicate one number carries the Lightning Storm symbol each round, so the wheel lands on it about once in 39 spins. You only get paid if you have a bet on that number, for example through Storm Chaser.
What is the maximum win in Lightning Storm?
The Lightning Storm bonus is capped at a 20,000x multiplier. The other four bonus games are capped at 10,000x. Casinos may also apply their own per-round payout cap.
Is Storm Chaser worth it?
Only if you want exposure to the biggest bonus. It returns 95.12%, slightly less than a plain number bet, and you will usually wait many rounds between triggers.
Does a wheel multiplier make a number a better bet?
No. Multipliers are random and already included in the RTP, so following them changes how swingy your session is, not how much you lose on average.

Not confirmed: Per-bet RTPs (Leaf 97.44%, numbers and X Chaser 95.13%, Storm Chaser 95.12%) come from independent reviews; Evolution's public page gives no RTP. The Leaf figure matches 19 of 39 segments at 1:1. The 19 Leaf / 20 number split is derived from the 39-segment wheel, the 20 bonus symbols placed on numbered segments and the 97.44% Leaf RTP; some reviews describe the layout differently. Storm Chaser's 1-in-39 hit rate assumes exactly one Lightning Storm symbol per round, as reported by LiveDealer; the split of the other 19 symbols across bonus games differs between sources. X Chaser and Storm Chaser stake amounts per round are not stated on Evolution's page; some sites quote cost multiples such as 2.7x or 7.8x that we could not confirm. Bet limits (often quoted as 0.10 to 10,000) and a 500,000 per-round payout cap are reported by reviews and vary by casino. One review mentions Odd/Even bets and another quotes an overall RTP of about 96.5%; neither appears in Evolution's rules, so both are ignored.
