Wanted Dead or a Wild slot review
Wanted Dead or a Wild is Hacksaw Gaming's dark Western slot on a 5×5 grid with 15 paylines, built around VS symbols that grow into multiplier reels. Three separate bonus games, from a sticky wilds round to a two-phase Dead Man's Hand, give it more range than most high volatility slots, with a top prize of 12,500x.

How to play Wanted Dead or a Wild
The Wanted Dead or a Wild slot plays on five reels and five rows with 15 fixed paylines. Three or more matching symbols from the leftmost reel form a line win. Bets range from 0.20 to 100 per spin.
The paytable is fairly flat. The five card ranks pay up to 1x for five of a kind, the bandit and the animal skull up to 5x, the money bag and liquor bottle up to 10x, and the gun chamber up to 20x. A line of five Wilds also pays 20x. Line wins on their own rarely move the balance much.
The hit frequency is listed at about 19%, which means roughly four spins in five return nothing. That is low even for a high volatility slot, so expect long dry spells. The value is concentrated in the VS symbols and in the three bonus games.
Wanted Dead or a Wild features explained
The base game revolves around one feature, which Hacksaw calls DuelReels.
- VS symbols: when a VS symbol is part of a winning line, it expands to cover its whole reel and turns wild. Two characters then face off, and the winner gives the reel a random multiplier between 2x and 100x.
- Stacked multipliers: if more than one VS reel is involved in the same win, their multipliers are added together before they are applied. Two reels showing 50x and 30x would boost the line by 80x.
- Wilds: regular Wilds land on any reel and stand in for every pay symbol.
- Three scatter types: Train Robbery, Duel and DEAD scatters each lead to a different bonus game.
A single VS reel with a low multiplier is common enough, but two or three reels with high values on the same spin are rare. That gap between an ordinary hit and a strong one is what gives the base game its high variance.
Wanted Dead or a Wild bonus games
Each bonus has its own trigger and a very different risk profile. Three or more of the matching scatter symbol start it.
- The Great Train Robbery: 10 free spins where every Wild that lands stays sticky for the rest of the round. Sticky Wilds can count in any number of lines, so the grid tends to get stronger towards the end. This is the steadiest of the three bonuses and is rated medium volatility.
- Duel at Dawn: 10 free spins with VS symbols landing far more often than in the base game, and up to five DuelReels on one spin. Because multipliers on several reels are added together, this round can produce the biggest results, and it is rated very high volatility.
- Dead Man's Hand: a two-part bonus. In the collect phase you have three spins, and each Wild or multiplier you collect resets the count to three. Up to 20 Wilds and a 31x multiplier can be gathered. When three spins pass without a new collection, the Showdown begins: three spins where all collected Wilds are placed at random positions and every win is multiplied by the total you built. It is rated high volatility.
The structure rewards different tastes. Train Robbery gives a slow build, Duel at Dawn is an all-or-nothing chase for stacked multipliers, and Dead Man's Hand depends on how well the collect phase goes before a single prize is paid.
Wanted Dead or a Wild bonus buy options
| Feature | Cost | RTP | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Great Train Robbery | 80× bet | 96.27% | 10 free spins with sticky Wilds |
| Duel at Dawn | 200× bet | 96.33% | 10 free spins with boosted VS symbols |
| Dead Man's Hand | 400× bet | 96.43% | The collect phase followed by the Showdown |
At a 1.00 bet these buys cost 80, 200 and 400. The return of each option sits close to the base game figure, with Dead Man's Hand slightly higher, so the choice is about variance more than value. Duel at Dawn at 200x is the most volatile purchase on the menu, and many buys will return well below their price.
Bonus buys raise the cost of each round sharply. They are not offered in the UK and may be switched off in other regions, and there is no ante or BonusHunt mode in this game.
Wanted Dead or a Wild RTP, volatility and max win
The top Wanted Dead or a Wild RTP is 96.38%, a house edge of 3.62%. Hacksaw also supplies 94.55%, 92.33% and 88.42% versions, and some databases show the 94.55% figure as their headline, so the info screen is the only reliable way to know which one you are playing.
Hacksaw rates the volatility 4 out of 5, and every independent source we checked calls it high. Combined with the low hit rate, that makes it one of the more demanding games in the Hacksaw catalogue. A sensible session budget is many times larger than for a medium volatility slot at the same bet.
The Wanted Dead or a Wild max win is 12,500x your bet, stated on Hacksaw's own game page. At the 100 top bet that is a potential payout of 1,250,000. Reaching it realistically needs stacked DuelReels in Duel at Dawn or a strong Dead Man's Hand collection, and recorded big wins on SlotCatalog include a 9,639x result.
Design and how it compares
The art direction sets the game apart from most Hacksaw releases. Instead of cartoon characters and bright colours, it shows barbed wire, twisted trees and a hazy sun over a dusty plain, with a heavier soundtrack to match. It has aged well since its 2021 release and still looks sharp on mobile.
Reviewers often compare it to Chaos Crew, which uses a similar grid and multiplier reels, and the sticky Wilds and collect-style bonus also echo earlier Hacksaw games. The difference is the choice of three bonuses with distinct profiles, which keeps the game varied over many sessions.
Compared with the Le series, such as Le Bandit or Le Outlaw, it is simpler to read and much harsher to play: there are no cascades or reveal chains, just lines, reels and multipliers.
Who Wanted Dead or a Wild suits
Wanted Dead or a Wild suits experienced players who accept long dry runs in exchange for a chance at large multiplied wins. Players who like to buy bonuses will appreciate the clear choice between three volatility levels.
It is a poor fit for casual play or small budgets. The 0.20 minimum bet is higher than many newer Hacksaw slots, and the low hit rate means a balance can drain quickly. Try the free demo first to get a feel for how rarely it pays, and see our Stake review for details of where we play.
Our verdict on Wanted Dead or a Wild
Wanted Dead or a Wild has earned its long run near the top of Stake's most played lists. DuelReels with additive multipliers up to 100x give the base game real tension, and the three bonus games offer a genuine choice between a steady build, an all-or-nothing chase and a two-phase collect. The 96.38% top RTP and the published buy RTPs are fair, and the dark Western look still stands out.
The downside is how unforgiving it is. A hit rate near 19% and high volatility mean extended losing streaks are normal, and lower RTP versions are common at some operators. We recommend it to players who understand that risk and budget for it, not to anyone looking for frequent small wins.
Overall = 7.8×0.25 + 8.0×0.25 + 7.3×0.2 + 8.0×0.15 + 7.0×0.15 = 7.7. The score rates the game, not your odds of winning.
